When You Are Unsure of the Exact Zakatable Amount

Question

If I cannot determine my exact wealth or past years precisely, how should I estimate my zakat?

Ruling (Fatwa)

Short answer: You must make a sincere, reasonable estimate of your zakatable wealth, erring on the side of caution to discharge the obligation, because zakat is a severe duty and ignorance does not excuse it. Details: Zakat is obligatory on every Muslim who possesses wealth reaching the nisab (minimum threshold) for a full lunar year. The Sahih hadiths emphasize the grave punishment for neglecting zakat (e.g., Sahih al-Bukhari 1403, Sahih Muslim 987a). If you are uncertain about the exact amount of your wealth or the number of past years, you should estimate as accurately as possible based on available records, memory, or reasonable approximation. The principle is to err on the side of caution to ensure the obligation is fulfilled. For past missed years, calculate the approximate wealth for each year and pay the due zakat accordingly. If that is impossible, pay what you believe is likely sufficient, and make sincere repentance. The Qur'an (Surah Ar-Rum 30:39) and hadiths stress that zakat is for seeking Allah's Countenance, so intention matters. The detailed zakat rates (Sahih al-Bukhari 1454) provide the standard to apply to your estimated amounts. Evidence: 1. Sahih al-Bukhari 1403: Severe warning about the punishment for not paying zakat, underscoring the obligation. 2. Sahih Muslim 987a: Another stern warning, showing that negligence is not excused. 3. Sahih Muslim 990a: The Prophet (ﷺ) called those who hoard wealth without paying zakat as losers. 4. Sahih Muslim 94d: Similar warning, emphasizing the necessity of paying zakat. 5. Surah Ar-Rum 30:39: Zakat is for seeking Allah's Countenance, so sincere estimation is acceptable. 6. Sahih al-Bukhari 1454: The detailed zakat schedule to apply to your estimated wealth.
