The Amount of Zakat al-Fitr: One Sa'

Question

How much is zakat al-fitr — what is a sa' in kilograms, and of which food?

Ruling (Fatwa)

Short answer: Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory as one sa‘ of the common staple food of the region. The sa‘ is a volume measure; its weight in kilograms varies depending on the food item, but scholars approximate one sa‘ to be roughly 2.5 kg for wheat or rice. The divine command is based on volume, not weight. The Prophet (ﷺ) prescribed one sa‘ of dates, barley, raisins, cottage cheese, or grain (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511, 1508, 1510; Sahih Muslim 985b, 984c). Evidence: 1. Sahih al-Bukhari 1511 – Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet made incumbent one sa‘ of dates or barley as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr. 2. Sahih Muslim 985b – Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said they used to give one sa‘ of grain, one sa‘ of cheese, or one sa‘ of raisins. 3. Sahih Muslim 984c – Ibn ‘Umar narrated the Prophet prescribed one sa‘ of dates or barley, and later people equated half a sa‘ of wheat as an equivalent. 4. Sahih al-Bukhari 1508 – Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said they gave one sa‘ of food, dates, barley, or raisins in the Prophet’s time. 5. Sahih al-Bukhari 1510 – Abu Sa‘id said they gave one sa‘ of food (barley, raisins, cottage cheese, or dates). Disclaimer: This ruling is based on the authentic texts provided.
