Gold for Men and Zakat on Prohibited Gold Items
Question
Gold is forbidden for men to wear — if a man owns a gold watch or chain, what is the ruling and is zakat due?
Ruling (Fatwa)
Short answer: The prohibition of men wearing gold is established from other authentic hadith (not supplied here). However, based on the supplied evidence, zakat is due on gold owned by a man that reaches the nisab and is not for permissible personal use. Since wearing gold is prohibited for men, a gold watch or chain owned by a man is considered an asset subject to zakat, provided it reaches the nisab (85 grams or 20 mithqal of gold) and is held for one lunar year. The same zakat rate of 2.5% applies.
Evidence:
1. Sahih Muslim 987a and Surah At-Tawbah 9:34-35: These warn of severe punishment for those who hoard gold and silver without paying zakat. The obligation covers all gold and silver wealth, not exempting prohibited forms.
2. Sahih al-Bukhari 1404 and 1405: These establish the nisab for gold and silver (five uqiyas of silver; for gold analogous).
3. Sahih al-Bukhari 1454: The Prophet's orders for zakat collection confirm that gold and silver are zakatable assets.
4. Sahih al-Bukhari 1448 and 1447: These reiterate the nisab thresholds and the general principle that zakat is due on wealth reaching the prescribed minimum.
