The Virtue and Reward of Paying Zakat

Question

What are the spiritual benefits and rewards promised for those who pay their zakat?

Ruling (Fatwa)

Short answer: Paying zakat brings immense spiritual rewards including the multiplication of wealth in the sight of Allah, an honorable reward in Paradise, purification from sins, and rescue from severe punishment on the Day of Resurrection. The Qur'an and authentic hadiths emphasize that those who fulfill this obligation are promised manifold increase and divine pleasure. Details: Zakat is not merely a financial duty but an act of worship that purifies the soul and wealth. Allah says in Surah Al-Hadid 57:18 that those who give sadaqat (including zakat) and lend Allah a goodly loan will have it increased manifold and receive an honorable reward (Paradise). The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned those who withhold zakat of severe punishment – plates of fire heated in Hell will be pressed against their sides, forehead, and backs (Sahih Muslim 987a). Conversely, paying zakat secures one from such torment and brings divine mercy. In Sahih Muslim 990a, the Prophet declared that those who hoard gold and silver without paying zakat are losers, implying that those who pay are successful. Furthermore, paying zakat is a sign of true faith and a means of attaining Allah's mercy (Sahih Muslim 1017a). The Prophet encouraged giving sadaqa even from jewelry (Sahih Muslim 1000a), and he praised a Bedouin who paid zakat on his camels, saying that Allah knows his good deeds (Sahih al-Bukhari 1452). Evidence: 1. Surah Al-Hadid 57:18 – manifold increase and honorable reward for those who give sadaqat/zakat. 2. Sahih Muslim 987a – severe punishment for those who do not pay zakat on gold and silver. 3. Sahih Muslim 990a – those who hoard wealth without paying zakat are losers. 4. Sahih Muslim 1017a – giving sadaqa alleviates hardship and brings divine reward. 5. Sahih Muslim 1000a – the Prophet commanded women to give sadaqa even from jewelry. 6. Sahih al-Bukhari 1452 – the Prophet acknowledged the Bedouin's zakat payment as a good deed. Disclaimer: This fatwa is based solely on the provided evidence.
