Buying Gold on Instalments or Credit
The most common question asked about gold in this region, and the one where the answer is least comfortable.
The arrangement is everywhere: take the jewellery home today, pay over six or twelve months. It is convenient, it is normal, and it runs into the rule directly.
Gold for money must be settled by both sides in the same sitting. In an instalment purchase the gold is delivered and the payment is deferred — one leg complete, one leg outstanding. That is riba al-nasi’ah: riba arising from delay, which is precisely what the hadith closed off.
What about a credit card?
It depends on what actually happens at the counter. If the card settles the purchase in full immediately — the shop is paid, the debt is now between you and the bank rather than you and the seller — the gold transaction itself was completed on the spot. If the arrangement is a deferred-payment scheme with the jeweller, it is the instalment problem in another wrapper.
Any interest charged on the card balance is a separate and independent problem.
The alternatives that keep it clean
- Save first, buy once — The straightforward answer, and the one with no dispute.
- Buy smaller amounts more often — A gram at a time, each settled in full, reaches the same place without the defect.
- Pay in full with your own funds — Whatever the instrument, the requirement is that the seller is paid completely at the moment you take the gold.
