Where to Keep Gold Once You Own It
Home, bank locker or allocated vault. Cost and risk move in opposite directions, and the right answer changes with the amount.
Buying gold well and then storing it badly is a complete waste of the first decision. There are three normal options and they trade cost against risk in opposite directions.
The three options
- At home — Free and instantly accessible. Every risk — theft, fire, loss — is yours alone, and household insurance usually caps gold cover far below what people assume.
- Bank locker — Cheap and secure against theft, but the bank does not insure the contents and cannot access them outside banking hours.
- Allocated professional custody — A fee, but the metal is held in your name, audited and insured. The only option that scales to serious amounts.
Practical rules that matter more than the choice
Keep the invoice and any assay certificate separately from the metal — resale value depends on them. Split large holdings across locations. Tell exactly one person you trust where it is; gold nobody can find after a death is gold that is lost.
On secrecy
The most common cause of stolen gold is somebody knowing it is there. Purchases discussed publicly, on social media or in a shop full of strangers, are the leak. Discretion is a storage decision.
